“Why is 450 birr useful when a loaf of bread costs 30 birr?” Is it for rent, or alimony? – Ethiopian Teachers Association.
The Ethiopian Teachers’ Association through Tikvah Ethiopia has requested attention to the fact that teachers’ training fees are very low, in connection with the cost of living.
What are the complaints from the association?
“From the point of view of the education system, we cannot call it the problem of the quality of education at present. It is an education crisis. We are in crisis. Pushing the problem to the teachers is seen. This is not correct.
To begin with, teacher training was not valued. For Mlale: Primary school candidate teachers are given 450 Birr to study outside of certain colleges.
Why is 450 birr useful when a loaf of bread costs 30 birr? Is it for rent or alimony? That’s where the problem begins.
Prospective teachers will be paid 450 Birr when they join the college. They move to fulfill their needs without focusing on education because it does not fulfill their needs. This has reduced the quality of the teaching profession. Therefore, the issue should be addressed.
The Ethiopian Teachers Association has studied. It should be implemented in that way.
On the other hand, these Mekelle, Bahir Dar, Addis Ababa, Jimma and Hawassa universities were called Centers of Excellence for the teaching profession and trained teachers for secondary schools.
But for the last three or four years, they are not training any students to enter the teaching profession.
Is this not going to keep our secondary schools with subsidized teachers? Where is this going?
Relatedly, there are the problems of book distribution. Not only is there a problem, but there are schools that are combined with elementary schools.
For Mlale: Chemistry, Physics and Biology are together. They are given by one teacher. This means that teachers are having a hard time teaching chemistry and physics and biology because they are not graduates.
A similar problem exists in other forms of education. There are curricula for which a teacher is not prepared. This is one problem that is affecting the quality of education. The overall lesson is that the sector has not received enough attention. Sufficient funding is not being allocated to it, so it should be allocated.
Teachers also go to legal institutions to enforce their rights when there are various problems of good governance, so the school period is closed. This has caused problems in the quality of education. “
The association informed us that these complaints were presented at a forum attended by the Ministry of Education.
The association urged the relevant parties to pay sufficient attention to the issue, and pointed out that the Ministry of Education has taken a demonstration to find a solution to the complaints raised.
